Effect of Biochar Amendment in Woodchip Denitrifying Bioreactors for Nitrate and Phosphate Removal in Tile Drainage Flow

Biochar has received increased attention in environmental applications recent years. Therefore, three pilot-scale denitrifying bioreactors, one filled with woodchips only and the other two enriched 10% 20% by volume of biochar from deciduous wood, were tested under field conditions for removal nitrate (NO3-N) phosphate (PO4-P) tile drainage water Lithuania over a 3-year period. The experiment showed possibility to improve NO3-N incorporating into woodchips. Compared amended biochar, effect was particularly higher at temperatures below 10.0 °C. results also revealed that alone can be suitable medium PO4-P removal, while amendment (regardless or 20%) lead large releases elements. Due potential adverse effects, use woodchip bioreactors proven very limited complicated. highlighted need determine retention capacity relevant substances depending on feedstock its physical chemical properties before using it bioreactors.
